"F" Dept. Drawing Office BID1/GB29913. 29th Sept. 1913. Mr Johnson for Mr Royce. Re Steering Wobbles. X451 I have had a series of experiments carried out on this subject and have come to definite conclusions with regard to it. (1) There are TWO kinds of wobbles, quite different in cause and in effect, though interconnected at one point,- (A) Wobbles due to the inclination backwards of the steering pivots. (B) Wobbles due to out-of-balance wheels. The two are interconnected because (A) wobbles are more easily started and are rather more violent, if the wheels are much out-of-balance, but the wobbles do not occur at the same time. (2) The (A) wobbles are those complained of by customers, being very violent, throwing the front of the car from side to side, and producing knocks and noises that are alarming. They begin at any speed under about 20 m.p.h., are usually started by roughish roads, rapid descents into holes, or violent jerks on the steering wheel from the driver. Gripping the wheel tightly increases them, but if the wheel | ||
