Dear Pilkington, Confirming our discussion on Friday we do believe that the main cause for the trouble that you have had with your A.C.9. bearing material has been due to oil shortage. We have always been in trouble with fine filters on the suction side of the pump. Your new design seems to be in a much happier position with it's oil system but we recommend that you should be extremely generous on the side of the oil pump. I am sure that A.C.9. will give you complete satisfaction on this engine and I only hope you will try it out. I was interested to hear you say that your test showed that lead bronze was not so susceptible to shortage of oil as A.C.9. I would be grateful if you would let me have the results of such tests because we have not come across this feature. We do know that A.C.9. is materially better than R.R. 56 under boundary lubrication conditions and we do know that Babbitt is incomparably superior to either lead bronze or A.C.9. but we have been unable to differentiate between the high load carrying capacity materials to a great extent with regard to this particular feature.
