X.3499 - RE:BLINDS FOR RADIATORS ON CARS It appears as though we certainly ought to be prepared to fit a blind or louvers to the car radiators so that the temperature of the water can be kept within a reasonable range. We think that it would be very difficult to get any scheme of shutters which did not eventually rattle also they would always have an ugly appearance. We suggest we might try a blind made of fine gauze. The advantage of the gauze would be that it would not be affected by weather conditions and it would not rattle. Another advantage we suggest is that it would tend to balance the temperature i.e. when the car speed is low, relatively more air would pass through the gauze. If a control for the radiator is fitted it frequently happens that it is adjusted to suit the running in open country and when the car comes to negotiate traffic, the water boils. The blind we suggest would be fitted at the bottom of the radiator behind the front cross member and could be operated by an endless cable so that the control would be positive in either direction.
