1029. (Experimental Dept.) Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}2/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 15th January, 1937. New-Hudson Ltd., Icknield Street, BIRMINGHAM. 18. For the attention of Mr. Fraser. Dear Sirs, Your Ref: AF/AL. In reply to your letter of 11th January, the reasons for preferring not to use Girling Brakes on the front axle are partly technical, partly financial. As regards the Technical side, there seems to be a certain lack of progressiveness about the front brakes which is more marked than on our own brakes, and which we are for various reasons unable to damp out without ruining the system. This difficulty we hope to overcome in time. With regard to Bowden wires, you will remember that you very kindly sent us various drawings of Bowdenex operated brakes some time ago which have received our fullest consideration; our opinion is that Bowden wires should not be used unless absolutely necessary, and no such necessity has arisen so far. Regarding the economics of Girling Brakes on the front axle, we may possibly have to modify the front axle beam in the near future, and as we are not mass producers, we want to make any modifications necessary all at one time. Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
