For the attention of Mr Donald Sessions.

Dear Sirs,

re D.W.S. Hand Hydraulic Jacks - Phantom III.

We beg to thank you for your letter of the 18th inst. in which you set out the conclusions derived from the visit of our Messrs. Lidsey and Grylls to your Works.

We believe the importance of eliminating all possible sources of failure as far as is practicable with the type of ram standardised on Phantom III is appreciated.

With regard to the loose washer type of gland, this does appear to have three distinct advantages, firstly, it eliminates the possibility of flash on the sealing surface. Secondly the necessity for obtaining adhesion between metal and rubber is avoided. Thirdly the moulding of the rings can be more easily handled, apart from the rams.

We, therefore, confirm that we are prepared to go ahead as rapidly as possible with testing out the loose ring type of gland, with a view to affecting its early standardisation on Phantom III.

Yours faithfully,
For and on behalf of ROLLS-ROYCE Limited
