Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X5499. To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} re Radiator Shutters. Copy to Nor. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} I should like to hear from you in regard to Mr.Paddon's suggestion as contained in SgG/E5.5.32. Mr.Paddon tells me he has taken no action to protect the idea provisionally and he did not see it onany car so that apparently it is an original scheme. In PM's view it is very interesting because in the usual thermostatic control the thermostat has to do all the work of/operating the shutters requiring quite a powerful instrument whereas with Mr.Paddon's suggestion the thermostat would only have to operate a butterfly valve, the actual hard work being done by the suction or spring, and in PM's opinion it should be cheaper and simpler apart from the main proposed benefit of closing the shutters when the car is standing still.
