Yesterday afternoon we had on test on a test bed engine the most up-to-date arrangement of starter, with the exception that there is not included an air damping arrange-ment to absorb the return energy of the armature when thrown out of gear, such as we have experimented with and found to a considerable extent effective on the 9-EX starter. Referring to the 9-EX starter for the moment, we have for some days had this in a condition which we think is the best possible without radical alteration, but this has been done by packing the armature (with a .075" distance piece) nearer in the poles and setting back the pinion against the pinion spring accordingly. It will be remembered that this machine has the rapid taper (3.100 to 2.900") and by doing this we have made it so much more certain of engagement that failure only takes place when quite cold. We have also practically eliminated the ingoing engagement thump and we have, as previously stated, counteracted the outgoing thump by means of an experimental air dash pot. The teeth are 5° spiral and the motor is the 45 slot unlengthened machine which is not good for power. The switch is the electrical interlocked one and the push button is duplex. Contd. | ||
