As far as we could ascertain the engine differs in no respect from that previously tried by R.{Sir Henry Royce} at WW. Actually the period that we described in our report on this car seemed definitely less marked; they have been doing a certain amount of work on crankshaft vibration dampers and apparently have improved the setting of this device. We went to the Packard Works and saw their 1928 chassis which had just been unpacked. The firing order remains unaltered, it has not been varied we were given to understand since early in 1926 when it was altered to the arrangement described by R.{Sir Henry Royce} The vibration damper on the crankshaft has been moved to the outside of the crankcase, we were told, to facilitate adjustment. Apparently they find this fitting most essential and are giving it a good deal of attention. The chassis was equipped with slightly smaller wheels and tyres, otherwise it differed little from the 1927 model. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
