ORIGINAL Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/2/LMS.S.23. 6-Goshawk-11. X4086 Attached is a report from Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} dated 20th.inst. The trouble he reports with the cylinder head is serious because this is the third cylinder head which has cracked whilst in normal use on the car. In all cases the car has been known to have run with the water boiling, but the conditions have been no worse than one anticipates they will receive in customers hands. We have asked Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} to return the cylinder head and as soon as it arrives we will send it on to W.H. The report from Laval that with no blanking on the radiator whatever it has been impossible to prevent the water boiling is disturbing because the conditions they are running under are not the worst conditions for water boiling. As regards Hy{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}'s request for a new front cross member to replace the one which has cracked on 6-Goshawk-11 (similar to 5-Goshawk-11), we doubt whether it is possible for that member to be replaced anywhere except at the Works. It means that the engine unit must be taken out of the frame completely, and the rivets fixing the pressed steel cross member under the radiator must be taken out on one side so that the side members can be sprung apart to fit the cross member, the rivets must then be replaced. We would suggest that the design of the cross member is modified so that it can be removed or else that bolts are used contd:- R.R. 199 (500 H) (SD. 296 18.3.17) M.P. 176549. | ||
