C.S.C F.H.R. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} January 15. 1919. BY1G/F15119. X. 295 RE DYNAMO AND SWITCH GEAR FOR 40/50 CHASSIS. X 294 We wrote to Messrs. Smith & Son, in order to inspect their dynamo and switch. The work they are turning out is certainly very good from the point of view of design. As an illustration of this I am sending you the switch for the lighting system, which is arranged as a cylinder, approximately 3 1/2" diameter and 2 1/2" deep. In the centre of the cylindrical case an ammeter is mounted, which can be, if specified, a Weston instrument. In regard to the switch, the sample I am sending has been hand made. The terminals will be all fixed up on a proper moulded basis, with moulded in fixtures on the final instrument, but the general design of the switch with the little locking apparatus in the form of a roller, was distinctly good, and represents the best thing by a long way which I have seen in this connection. The switch referred to is the only one they have on hand at present, and therefore they were very reluctant at letting me have it to submit to you personally, but I promised them it would be returned in the course of a few days if they would kindly leave it in my possession. In regard to the dynamo, the one or two distinctly bad features which existed in the original Trier & Martin scheme, which was the basis for the present Smith system, have been eliminated, with the result that they are turning out what is practically, as far as efficiency is concerned, a simple contd. | ||
