Coasting presents some difficulties and seems to require a neutral between 3rd. and top marked on the quadrant at which the dogs are not withdrawn in addition to the neutral between R. {Sir Henry Royce} and 1st.

In this case of the gparmtate at high speeds when coasting fast.

III. The suggestion has also been made that with a quadrant control for the forward speeds, reverse and neutral can be obtained by a separate lever. Movement of this lever is needed before the dogs are disengaged for a quiet neutral.

IV. There may not be insuperable objections to the main clutch being held free when the change lever is in neutral. In this case the engagement of the dogs between 3rd. and top, and top and 3rd. could be dealt with by Salerni rings or with power available the operation of a direct drive clutch additional to the main clutch may be possible and worth while.

When the main clutch is held free high speeds of the gear parts are avoided during coasting.
