Re 18-9-IV.

We have received your letters of the 17th and 18th inst.
The car has been held up these last two days for examination purposes. A considerable time has been spent on the brakes as these had been put up in a poor condition in fitting of the same. We have also spent considerable time with the clutch. We are getting out a full report for the mileage of 6.000 this will give you full details of the various behaviours of the units. We quite agree with you that probably the boom question can be delt with better on the Dynamometer than here. There has been several various tests taken regarding the boom but when I tried the car when I arrived it would not be passable for production. We do not think that the cylinder head is good enough to run 10,000 miles as there is something radically wrong with the material. Roberts reports that with the high temperatures they ran into serious trouble with pre-ignition and could not get satisfactory results. This is rather misleading by the condition of the plugs etc. and I personally say that the condition of the valve seats have been more to blame than anything else. We hope however to verify the tests during the next day or two.

Re Rattles from the Servo Gears.

I have stated in my report that these are now almost non-existant and would not be taken exemption to.

Re Brakes

Although the A.M.R.2 material is superior to Ferodo in efficiency when hot, we are having much trouble with squeaks as before. Therefore we are as we were, regarding the brake squeaking.
We will inform you in due course the progress made.
