Dear Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}
I had a letter from Clapham asking for information on certain subjects including interleaving. I answered this as fully as possible.
The problem with this: Either the interleaving is soft & wears out and does not squeak, or else it is hard & durable & squeaks.
Now this is exactly the same problem as we had with brakes, only with brakes we had the added difficulty of temperature. So long as we stuck to the type of lining which I think of as the "synthetic resin" type, which includes the famous MR (we tried at least 50 types I should think) we got nowhere. Now with V.G.90 or rubber base linings we are really much better off!
