HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM E.W. B.Y. C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} re. FAILURES OF SPRING DRIVE - PHANTOM 2. About Feb. of last year we sent through LeC. 2872., shewing suggestions for strengthening the spring drive plate on P. 2., but at this time R.{Sir Henry Royce} did not think there was sufficient grounds for considering any alteration, as the two failures which had occurred were on engines in our own Works and were due to causes which could be explained. Since then however we have had one or two more failures and we therefore think some move should be made. Our print of LeC. 2872. is missing but from memory we think the best suggestion shewn is one in which the spokes and centre portion of the disc are stiffened, while the outer part remains unaltered. We would like to know if there would be much difficulty in producing a disc of this sort with the friction surfaces finishing on the inside against a radiused corner.
