X3056 X451 Oy1 - G 4821 August 4, 1921 Mr. Claude Johnson, Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Ltd., London, England. Attention: Mr. Hives. Dear Sir:- Re: Power Curves X451 / X 3056 We wish to thank Mr. Hives for the power curves of the R-R engine recently sent us. We think there is a discrepancy in these curves because the power loss with cut-out closed, at any speed of the engine, is greater on the dynamometer test than on the bench test. The power lost in the transmission and tires at any given speed would, we think, be a fairly constant proportion of the engine power at the flywheel, and we cannot see any reason for the power lost in transmission to be actually less when a greater horsepower is transmitted, as is shown by these curves. We would be glad if Mr. Hives would write us in explanation of this apparent discrepancy. Yours truly, ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, Inc.
