Cellulose lacquered cambric covered maconite H.T. ignition cables ex. chassis 24EX.
These wires have been removed after completing a 10000 mile test in France. The exhaust side wires were in a very ragged condition the cambric covering having cracked and frayed very badly at the plug ends; the dielectric underneath however was OK. The B.I wires were not frayed at all but the condition was very similar and the varnished cambric cracked immediately the cable was bent. We are therefore of the opinion that varnished cambric is unsuitable as a heat resisting covering for our H.T. wires, something in the nature of woven asbestos would appear to be better particularly for the exhaust wires where these emerge from the tube at the plug ends.
