The battery is then in a good condition for being placed on the chassis and connected up to the electrical system. It should be well packed in its box so that it cannot move and the cable terminals greased before attaching to battery. Use of Charging Switch. As a rule the charging switch should always be kept on when the car is in use. There is no need to switch this off every time the engine is stopped as the cut-out takes care of the switching operation, but it is advisable to switch off when leaving the car. If the car is used in circumstances which require frequent use of the starter and lights, it will be found quite necessary to always keep the dynamo charging switch on during running. If, however, the car is used for long runs at a high speed in the day-time, it will probably be better to switch off the dynamo sometimes. The rule should be as follows :- If, with the car standing and the engine running with the charging switch on, the lights and other apparatus being off and the ammeter indicating 10 or more amperes of charge, the cells of the battery arenot seen to be gassing when the vent plugs are removed, keep the charging switch on during further running until they are. If, however, every cell of the battery is gassing freely, it is quite unnecessary and somewhat detrimental to continue charging for any | ||
