X5005 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c.c. Mr. W. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hives RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} [text is struck through] Transmission Damper and Terraplane Engine Suspension - 20/25. The assembling difficulties experienced were due to:- (1) The clearance with sheet metal cross member too fine. We suggest elongating the hole in the cross member to below the universal joint flange, saving weight and giving unlimited clearance. We also think more holes could be put in this crossmember to lighten it, without detriment. (2) The modification to the gearbox nose piece has removed the stop against which the universal joint bolts came back, so allowing them to be pushed out of reach. We have now stopped these bolts with a ring. (3) The propeller shaft could not be "shut up" on its sliding joint, sufficiently to enable the end to pass the sheet metal crossmember vertically. We have now slightly shortened the tubular part of the propeller shaft. With these modifications the brake differential does not appear to be a difficulty, and we have not modified it.
