TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ) G to BJ. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} PHANTOM CYLINDER BLOCKS. X8030 OY. has pointed out a defect in our Phantom cylinder block casting. This has shewn itself very definitely in the American practice owing to their casting being thinner and weaker than our English equivalent. It is however a real fault and should be corrected at once. We have sent a method of treating existing cylinders by fitting bars to the cover, and a method of altering the casting to three small round covers instead of the long ones. There is no doubt this will help to eliminate the piston knocks, especially those known as 2. and 5. knocks. It will be remembered that there has been difficulty in getting pistons sufficiently flexible to avoid knocks. This modification may make pistons satisfactory which have in the past been giving trouble. There is little doubt that the pedestal piston however is probably the best one that we have, judging from the experience with 7-EX. in France. In conclusion I think we ought to make a desperate effort to get this fault corrected at the earliest possible moment. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
