X3527 ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC SPRINGFIELD, MASS. ROLLS R ROYCE PERSONAL Oy2-W-62323 June 23, 1923. To: Mr. Hives From: Mr. Olley Oil Level Indicator Have received proposed standardization of oil level indicator. We have not seen the latest drawings of this scheme, but we received an early scheme and made up an indicator for 102-CE. We found that the permissible variation of level from full to the point where fluttering of the pressure needle occurs is only about 3/4 inch, if my memory is correct, and this rather put us off the scheme. A further consideration is that though the present scheme is rather messy and expensive to make, it gives one an indication of the quality and condition as well as the level of the oil. Also it does not require opening the hood, and, finally and most important, it has the advantage of leaving nothing whatever to the judgment or discretion of the chauffeur, but works on a rigid rule, namely, that when the oil does not flow, one must fill up till it does. We are satisfied and so are our owners with the present scheme without the oil tank. Of course we may change over when we see your latest drawings for the level indicator. We thought the Goshawk scheme was very good indeed. Oy. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Olley | ||
