An analysis of the theoretical Otto Cycle indicates that the power output of an engine can be increased by increasing the thermal efficiency or by increasing the weight of charge in the cycle per unit of time. The thermal efficiency of the theoretical cycle is limited only by the compression ratio, but in the actual engine it is influenced by such additional factors as air-fuel ratio, spark advance, volumetric efficiency, combustion chamber design, and fuel antiknock value.

Voluminous data are available on the effect of compression ratio on engine power and efficiency, so those interested in the subject are familiar with the practical limitations. The weight of charge consumed per unit of time may be increased by the use of larger engines or higher rotative speed or by an increase in the pressure of the charge at the beginning of compression. The practical limitations of engine displacement and speed are well known.

A few years ago a new page was written in the history of superchargers and supercharged engines when a stock engine below the ten thousand dollar class was introduced with a supercharger as standard equipment. Although much work has been done in applying supercharging to automotive and commercial vehicle engines, comparatively few fundamental data covering the effect of supercharging
