Proposal to modify supercharger gear teeth for the Merlin engine to improve contact and increase service life.

MERLIN ENGINE - SUPERCHARGER GEARS.
ALTERATION TO GEAR TEETH.

As a result of recent failures of supercharger gears, investigations have been made with a view to improving the tooth contact and so increasing the life of the gears.

Scheme.
Proposal.

It is proposed to modify the teeth as follows:-

Cluster Gear - (Drawing No. R.M.3813.)
Pinion Gear - ( " " " R.M.3814.)
Impeller Shaft - ( " " " R.M.4611.)
Wheel - ( " " " R.M.4612.)

The effect of this modification is to increase the amount of tip relief and so ensure that the gears bed on the correct portion of the tooth.

The modification also includes the use of a larger radius at the root of the tooth.

A.I.D. approval has been obtained for this modification.
