REPORT OF VISIT TO A.E.C. LTD. 9.1.38.

This visit was made along with Mr.Herrington of High Duty Alloys with the object of determining the requirements and the advisability of supplying Hall's metal bearings to the above Company.

The officials interviewed were Messrs. Rackham and Robinson.

At the present moment A.E.C are using lead Bronze for both main and big ends but admit that they are expensive and that with the large clearance necessary they have trouble with oil consumption. They also apparently are troubled in a similar manner to Leylands, in that a seized bearing results in a scrapped crankshaft when using nitrogen hardened crankshafts.

They are experimenting with "Tocco" hardening of crankshafts using a material they say to the same specification that we use for Merlin, namely by this means of hardening they can get a figure of 550 Brinell.

They require main bearings only at the moment and we have agreed to let them have one set of bearings, rough machined and heat treated, in two weeks time

These bearings are for an oil engine of 6 cylinders of which further particulars are to follow, but the following details we know -

Bearing dia. = 3.312
Max. R.P.M. = 2000
Max.Cyl. pres. = 1000 lbs/sq.in.
Compression ratio = 16 : 1
Max. main bearing load = 1500 lbs/sq.in.
Oil press. = 35 lb/sq.in.
