RE. STARTER ON 5-GOSHAWK-11. X.3592 X.3587

This has been taken from the car, and is being sent to Derby.

When the cover and L.H. threaded nut at rear of Bendix drive were removed it was found impossible to take out the spring drive unit for examination purposes owing to the tightness of the rear ball bearing on its spindle, necessitating first of all (for this otherwise simple operation) the dropping of undershield and removal of complete starter motor.

I asked on Saturday that another starter unit should be sent at once for this car, which is now in London. Evidently some severe shocks have damaged this one which is being returned.

I understood we were using Bijur pinions, and had abandoned Bendix, as giving too severe and noisy engagements. This car should have the standard, and the best.

At WW. we thought we had changed some more recent ones which unless proved defective on test by some oversight should function better than the original Bendix or Bijur. We have heard nothing about these for months.
