-2- ENGINE (contd) SWOL Tappets. The chromium plating of the bottom tappets has worn considerably. We are now getting reasonable results and the cause of wear is attributed to bad chromium plating, local bedding, and lack of initial lubrication. With regard to lubrication, it is now the practice to completely fill up the camshaft compartment with oil before assembling the bottom tappet blocks. LeSmith Clutches. The first chassis placed on test were fitted with clutch plates with incorrect friction material and were also known to be out of truth. When plates with correct material were fitted i.e. No.6. Ferodo, we had a lot of trouble with clutches not stopping. This we attribute to three causes - (1) Too much "set up" i.e. about .045" plus a certain amount of out of truth running of the clutch plate. The amount of separation of an average clutch is only .075". (2) Insufficient clearance of the oilite bush. (3) A tendency for the clutch plate to tighten up on the driving splines when hot. GEAR BOX. GRY{Shadwell Grylls}- The first six gear boxes had very noisy first speed gears. On dismantling for attention to this point it was found there was insufficient clearance on the first motion shaft bush in which the third motion shaft runs. also the speedometer drive was found to be running dry. This latter point has now been cleared up by a modification recommended by the Experimental Department. There is a very dry noise from the continuous gears when idling, which affects all gear boxes. We consider that this is a point which requires attention and improvement. F.J.H Steering. This we consider is the worst feature on the car. Whilst it is a great improvement over Phantom II, we still feel that "joggling" will be complained about when cars get in customers hands. contd. | ||
