Dear Sirs,

We beg to thank you for your letter of the 2nd inst., regarding the use of Cone worms for an overhead camshaft drive.

Regarding your queries, the overall reduction of the drive must be 2 to 1, but the individual ratios could be adjusted for convenience. The power to drive the camshaft is negligible, but the shaft may undergo torque reversals of the order of ± 5 lbs. ft. six times per revolution. In addition the intermediate shaft may be utilised to drive auxiliaries requiring 2 or 3 H.P. The engine speed to be provided for is 5,500 r.p.m., giving a camshaft speed of 2,750 r.p.m.

We are pleased to note that you consider a smaller centre distance than 3½" is possible. Meanwhile please note that there is no necessity for the centres of the two drives to be equal. We purposely refrain as far as possible from placing design limitations in our requirements, so that you may have a free hand in the matter and will be in a position to recommend what you consider will be the best drive to meet the case.

We note that you have no English Licensee for your gears, and suggest that you approach either of the following firms :-

Messrs. Bostock & Bramley Ltd.,
Odontic Works,
Stalybridge.

or

Messrs. David Brown & Sons,
Huddersfield.
