Copy to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} 1300 Bv/DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}10/SW. 14th July, 1941. Burman & Sons, Ltd., Ryland Road, BIRMINGHAM 15. For the attention of Mr.H.Burman. Dear Sirs, The print of the cross steering arrangement PL.448, promised on my last visit is included with this letter. As already indicated on the tele-phone to your Mr. Briggs (Junior), the boss on the steering box in the position suggested on your drawing S-484, would foul our pressing onto which the actual box mounting bracket is bolted. In addition, an unfortunate mistake in my last letter gave the position of the face of this boss as 1.05" from the centre line of the column instead of the centre line of the rocker shaft. I am enclosing a print of our PL.760 which shows our suggested position for the boss. You will note that we prefer the boss tapping 3/8" B.S.F. instead of 3/8" Whitworth, as we have no standard setscrews with Whitworth threads. With regard to the further tele-phone conversation on Friday last, we are arranging to have the steering wheel detail altered to the 48 splines instead of the 50 as soon as your drawing comes to hand. We would however, prefer to retain the 2.13/32" projection and 3/4" length of splines, as the alteration to the shorter projection appears to imply a fair amount of alteration to our control pieces, and we do also prefer the increased spline length in the aluminium hub of our steering wheel. I believe this clears up all the outstanding points from our end. We shall proceed with the alterations to our mounting bracket, as shown on PL.760, unless we hear from you of any objection to the suggested boss position. Yours faithfully, DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions} | ||
