Dear Sirs,

STEERING GEAR ROLLER:

With further reference to our letter of the 7th instant, regarding the above, we have now sectioned the portion of the roller in question, and we are despatching this to you under separate cover in order that you may examine the section in conjunction with our previous and present remarks.

From this section you will note that the main trouble has been in the depth of case, this being entirely removed from the conical portion of the bore, which of course is the roller track, and being exceptionally thin elsewhere, and the only portion of the surface which is hard at all is the O.D., this giving a Rockwell of C.61.

It is certainly surprising to us that with this softness no indentation has occurred, and we can only assume that the service has been comparatively short, and that the wear due to softness has been able to develop prior to any indentation being experienced.

Other points with respect to the condition of the material etc. will readily be apparent on examination of the section, and we can only conclude
