Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}9/ML.8.7.40. Your review of the Aspin valve is extremely interesting. I cannot understand why the figure for Wood's engine should be so much better than any other sleeve valve engine we have previously investigated, but doubtless we shall be able to find out from him why this is so. The Aspin valve opening diagram, when the very best is made of the cylinder centres and valve size, is sufficiently good to be a serious competitor to the poppet valve. I therefore think we should complete the necessary drawings to instal the Aspin head on the overhead camshaft engine and let Aspin complete his designs of the head. Whether he will be able to fabricate this during the war or not is questionable. When we come back to our 2-stroke oil engine I think we should definitely lay out a scheme with the Aspin valve as an alternative, to the poppet valve. I will try and arrange a discussion with Wood in the immediate future so that he can consider the results of your work. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
