Mr Platford submitted two broken valve springs of the heavy experimental type, and one standard spring, the coils of which had closed slightly under test. He informed the Committee that he had run 8 of the experimental (heavy) springs, and 4 standard springs on the test rig; after 30 hours running, one of the springs submitted was found to be broken, and one of the standard springs closed up slightly. The second experimental valve spring broke after a further 2 hours' run; this period of running represents less than 3,000 miles on the road. He was proceeding with these tests, having replaced the faulty springs.
The Committee, after inspecting these springs, were of the opinion that the fractures were ordinary torsional fractures, but they remarked on the peculiarity of most spring fractures occurring near the lower end of the spring.
