In this respect the latest 20 HP. 6" tyre for the 19" rim is worse off than the 6.75" tyre for the 21" rim that we originally standardized on the 40/50 HP. as the original Silent tread pattern. The increase in width of tread appears to be inevitable to get reasonable tyre life, and we shall be worse off when we come to the 7" tyre on the 20" rim on the big car.

In view of these facts we have taken up with Messrs. Dunlop the possibility of improving the non-skidding qualities of our present Silent Tread tyre with the sacrifice of the minimum amount of silence. We have discussed the tread pattern with them, and they are producing a tyre for us to try which we think will be an improvement. In the meantime, they are experimenting with compounds which contain various forms of abrasive powder, which tends to give the rubber a better grip on any surface. The objections that we have to this are :-

(1) It invariably reduced the wearing qualities of the rubber.

(2) It greatly increases the weight of the tyre.

We therefore think that this development is at present rather impractical.

In cases of complaints of skidding during the coming winter, it should be pointed out that Triple Stud
