BRONZE VALVE GUIDES IN PLACE OF CAST IRON. Origin. To reduce wear. Experimental Test Report. The guides are made of phosphor bronze in place of cast iron. The valves were ground taper at the top of the stem. See report attached ref. RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}3/LS20. 8. 24. Road Test Report. Run 12,600 miles on 98-NK. Run 6,800 miles on 9-PK. Run 65 hours on test bench. No troubles. Considerably less wear than cast iron. Choices: A Scrap and replace at all costs, including Chassis already delivered to customers. B Scrap and replace on Chassis in works. C Scrap present stock and replace on all Chassis not yet handed to test. D Use existing stock Alteration effective on future Chassis. Weight of Old Part.
