Mr. Claude Johnson,
Managing Director,
Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
London, England.

Attention: Mr. Hives.

Dear Sir,

Re Batteries and Starter Motors.

I enclose herewith single copies of some tests made by the Westinghouse people at various times on our cars with their own motors on 4-EX and with the R-Rmotor on a demonstration car.

These were not sent before because I have waited to see the final results with the Westinghouse outfit.

These tests having been taken at various times under various conditions do not conform a complete record of the characteristics of the Westinghouse starting motor but they bring out one point with which I believe you are familiar and which I want to illustrate further.

I think you will remember that the early Westinghouse outfit on 4-EX, using the Exide LXR battery and standard R-R thin starter cable, gave very unsatisfactory results when the engine was cold, though it turned the engine at a very high speed when warm.

You will remember that we substituted for the thin cable a special thick cable supplied by the Westinghouse Co. and similar to that supplied by the Bijur Co. for their outfit on 22-LW.

22-LW, with the Bijur outfit and the thicker cable, was satisfactory, but on 4-EX, when the engine was very cold, it was still possible to stall the starting motor.

You will remember, however, that we substituted a Willard SJW-28 battery; that is, a battery exactly similar to the one we are proposing to use but with wood separators instead of rubber.

The comparison between the two tests is shown on the attached sheet dated February 8.

Contd.
