RE DALBY-WATSON OPTICAL INDICATOR* - X.3181.

On September 3rd. last we received a letter from Messrs. G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Cussons Ltd., Lower Broughton, Manchester, stating that they had one of the latest type of the above indicator set up and running on a test engine, and suggesting that if we were interested in this, they would be pleased to show it us in operation. They had already sent particulars of this instrument to Mr. Nadin in answer to an enquiry of his for anything of interest. We replied that we were interested in the possibility of indicating our engines and that we should like further particulars, and would probably be glad to see the instrument in operation if we considered it might be suitable. They thereupon sent us photographs of the Mark 6 type ( not quite the latest) together with a couple of specimens of indicator diagrams taken with the indicator. These diagrams, which were taken at a speed of 2300 R.P.M., and show a maximum pressure of about 175 lbs/sq.inch, appear to be quite satisfactory. We were informed that they had taken reliable and accurate diagrams about 5" long by 3" high at speeds in excess of 2000 R.P.M. and having a maximum pressure of 300 lbs/sq.inch; also that the apparatus would stand a pressure of 400 lbs/sq.inch.

+ An early form of the instrument was described in the Mechanical Engineer of March 13th. 1914.

(Contd).
