-2- For all endurance running the mixture control was adjusted to give the position of maximum fuel economy (i.e. below the weakest maintained position). For all power curves and throttle curves, running was done at the weakest maintained condition. Fuel - D.T.D.134, i.e. 75/25 Aviation/Bensol. Oil - Triple Shell. Plugs - K.L.G.633 and Lodge A.55. - 12 mm. type. Magneto Timing - (1) 18° B.T.D.C. at F.A. - for 2 hr. endurance test. (2) 29° B.T.D.C. at F.A. - altered from the above because it was not found possible to lose power by advancing the magneto up to the F.A. position. Range of Magneto Control The independent controls gave a range of 22° (crankshaft) on A side and 20° on B side. Sleeve Timing. I.O. 14° B.T.D.C. E.O. 66° B.B.D.C. I.C. 40° A.B.D.C. E.C. 18° A.T.D.C. Compression Ratio. Checked on A.1 & B.6. - 6.7/1. Two Hour Endurance Test. K.L.G.633 plugs were used for this test. During the running-in period, trouble was experienced with water leakage from the ring nuts and header auxiliary studs, but this was stopped by tightening down the appropriate nuts. After 40 mins. running the test was stopped due to the failure of two of the auxiliary studs (E.37758) on B side header. The holes were plugged and the test continued. At the end of the test another stud on B. side was found to have broken, making three in all. The average figures for the test which was carried out at 2250 R.P.M. were :- c/B.H.P. 481 Fuel Cons. .464 pts/bhp/hr. Oil Cons. 12 pts/hr. Oil Press. lbs/sq.in. 75 Main 2.5 Low. Oil Temps. 54°C In. 83°C Out. Water Temps. 73°C In. 85°C Out. The last five minutes were run at F.T. and the figures were :- 517 c/BHP with a specific cons. of .507 pts/hp/hr. | ||
