PHANTOM FRONT AXLE CONTROL. X8470 X634

With reference to the experiments which have been carried out at our request to determine the best length of lever and position for the damper in the above control, we have gone over the ground again, and are suggesting to R.{Sir Henry Royce} that the 12" lever originally instructed by him as a compromise should be increased to 14", in order to obtain the advantages of perfect geometry, especially as, as far as we can see, there are no serious objections in any way, and in some respects, particularly the engine vibration damper, the job is a little easier than before. You could for instance use the existing vibration damper pieces if you wished, though we have proposed somewhat lightened and simplified pieces for future production.

It will be noticed that we have increased the length of the lever inside the damper so that the slacks are no more important than before, and the same springs can be used.

In view of the urgency of this experiment, and the fact that the modifications proposed seem to be improvements without any corresponding objections, we suggest that the experiment should be carried out on the lines suggested on N. scheme 2331. instead of the original proposal with a 12" lever.

We also send N. scheme 2332. shewing the changes required in the exhaust pipe to deal with this 14" lever. The one dotted is a temporary scheme for use with the present manifold. The permanent scheme with new manifold is shewn in full.
