20 HP. DYNAMO No.489 EX CHASSIS 47-G.5.

We have duly inspected this machine. It does not appear to have suffered from any actual failure, and we are not sure therefore of the exact reason for which the machine was returned.

The commutator solder had only just begun to go very slightly on four or five segments. On running the machine in the condition as received it functioned normally, but with a fairly high output, this being due to the position of the control brush of 117° from the positive brush, which incidentally was slightly retarded in relation to the mark. This angle should be 122°.

The negative brush has been much filed, and it does not now properly fit the brush holder. Some sparking has occurred caused by collection of brush dust etc. which has made the control brush somewhat sluggish. A negative brush has been inserted in the positive brush holder, but this is only a matter of pigtail terminal being wrong.

Taking all things together, it appears that the condition of the machine is entirely a result of things which have been done to it since it left these Works, and we consider that action might be taken accordingly.

We return the dynamo to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}
