NO. 1670 The Commonwealth of Massachusetts DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS WILLIAM F.{Mr Friese} WILLIAMS, COMMISSIONER REGISTRY OF MOTOR VEHICLES COMMONWEALTH PIER, BOSTON, MASS. HEADLIGHT INSTRUCTIONS Compliance with the law necessitates the use of 1. An approved device 2. A 21 candlepower bulb 3. A polished reflector and 4. The proper focusing of the bulb and aiming of the lamp. All of the above requirements must be met to secure a legal headlight beam. Devices are approved only after tests which show that they comply with the intent of the law for illumination of the roadway and freedom from glare. If they are not installed in accordance with the instructions given below they will not give the required results. Bear in mind that the proper equipment properly adjusted will benefit the driver of the car as well as other users of the highway, because better road lighting and freedom from glare are both obtained at the same time by proper adjustment. 1. THE APPROVED DEVICE Approved headlamps must be used as manufactured. No substitution of other types of lenses or reflectors is permissible, for such devices are approved as a unit and must be so used. Approved reflectors must be used with clear glass and must be installed right side up so that the name reads correctly. Approved lenses must be installed right side up so that the name reads correctly. Install them carefully so that they are tight and cannot twist around. They must be used with a parabolic reflector (the ordinary equipment). A complete list of approved devices is given on the last page. Every electric headlight must be equipped with one of these devices. Each device bears the name listed in full. Acetylene headlamps may be used if equipped with 6 inch mirrors, ⅝ ft. burners and clear glass fronts. 2. THE BULB You must use a 21 c.p. gas-filled bulb. This applies to all electric headlamps. Bulbs which show signs of blackening or a whitish discoloration on the inside of the glass are inefficient and should be discarded, — they no longer give 21 c.p. All gas-filled bulbs have a finely coiled V shaped filament. None but clear glass bulbs may be used. Don't drive with only one headlight. Carry spare bulbs and avoid arrest. | ||
