SYNCHROMESH 2ND GEAR.

The two alternative positions for the synchromesh mechanism on the 2nd. speed gears are on the sideshaft at the bottom of the gearbox or on the 3rd. motion shaft, in line with the present 3rd speed cones.

To settle the doubt in the former case whether the cones would work when submerged in oil, we filled completely the gearbox on 1.J.3. chassis. The only effect noticeable when changing gear was the greater effort required because of the increased oil friction losses, the change gear having more the feel of a 40/50 than 25 HP.

There was no tendency for the dogs to crash due to the cones being less efficient; they therefore work satisfactorily under oil.
