[Handwritten] HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} S/W. Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} from H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} [text 'from H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints}' is struck through] c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re:- PETROL FILTERS. Your Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}3/W13.12.24. There are one or two points in your memo I want to comment on. 1. The loss of trustworthiness I suggest arises in several ways. For example in a filter provided by ourselves we choose the mesh and decide the area of gauze. 2. Periodically we ourselves as well as the owners and drivers have opportunities of examining their filters. In the case of Roadside pumps this is not so and no one knows even whether the filter is in use or not. We all know the usual condition of the wayside Garage funnel! 3. You mention the "complaints we receive" which agrees with my impression of the need for action. 4. As foreign matter collects in both autovac tanks and carburetter filters (I suggest to a much greater extent than it did years ago and vide EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}'s Circular No.366) I agree that the exit filter from tank is wrong. I think it is far too small and that foreign matter gets pushed through it especially perhaps after it begins to get clogged. 5. If the foreign matter is between the tank and the carburetter it should collect early in the life of the car once for all and perhaps cause trouble only once. I am by no means sure this is the case. Are you? 6. Our latest 20 h.p. case, showed a choked tank filter, a collection in the Autovac, a collection in the carburetter filter and a L.S. jet hopelessly stopped with fluff. It's the fluff that bothers me because it is not a product of the inside of petrol pipes and does not agree with R's theory that only grit and scale need worry us. 7. We incline to a view here also that the 20 h.p. carburetter filter is not a close enough fit. This view is shared by L.E. | ||
