takes place after they have been run in on the rig, or lathe test appears to be due to the elongation of the holes in the leather links from wear, but this is not very considerable.
We recommend that the standard 1" belt for the dynamo should be run on the rig (after soaking in engine oil) for 4 hours, with a load of 24 lbs on the lever.
The stretch that takes place after this period is comparatively small but at the same time steady, and it continues until the belt has stretched about 2.5% 5/8", when failure occurs. We have had experience of belts breaking after about 9,000 miles on the road.
We have several belts on the experimental cars which have been run in accordance with the above recommendation, and they are working quite satisfactorily except that they have to be adjusted about every 400 to 500 miles or they will begin to slip.
