(6) STEERING GEAR.
All the points raised on LeC.537 have been embodied in the standard design. In regard to this particular design, there is one point about it which tends to make it a very difficult proposition to fit up, namely, the fact that on LeC.537 the end of the taper plug butts up against the back of the phosphor bronze pad at the same moment as the collar at the outer end of the plug butts against the end of the thbe. In a modified design which I am attaching herewith, I propose that the outer spigot for the phosphor bronze pad should be reduced and the length of the taper plug increased accordingly so that it comes more under the thread which it is supposed to squeeze out into direct contact on the nut which, at the same time I propose leaving a definite gap of .010" to .020" between the end of the plug and the back of the pad. This small amount of clearance would considerably relieve the Fitting Department, and in the event of the screwed adjustment piece slacking back it eill only mean that there would be an increased slack between the ball and the pad of about .015".
With reference to the question of the design by which the ball fits into the lever, I am pushing forward with the design which you have just sent me on LeC.1036 - I take it you would prefer this type of joint to be adopted without delay, if so, I will issue standardisation sheets shewing the present standard and the proposed modification.
