X1110 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Smth.14/KW. 9th July, 1936. Messrs. Borg & Beck Ltd., Tachbrook Road, Leamington Spa. Dear Sirs, Further to the visit of your Messrs. Barker & Armitage to our Works yesterday, we beg to confirm the various points raised. During the last week or two we have been returning the majority of the clutches delivered by you, with complaints that either the setting of the operating fingers or the regularity of the compressed thickness of the driven plates was not within the agreed limits. This situation was intolerable to both Companies and we have been trying to put the questions of limits and inspection on a better basis. Finger Setting. Although it has been agreed that the finger contact pads should be coplanar to within .005", we have not found more than 2% of the clutches delivered during the last 3 weeks to be inside this margin. We have had to give instructions to fit clutches with finger errors up to .010" so as to maintain production. We understand that you are going to investigate this matter further. Meanwhile you consider that in the case of the 11" clutches, an error in inspection might be occasioned by our using a gauge plate with three contact faces, whereas the pressure plate has four release brackets. This might cause unsymetrical distortion of the pressure plate whilst the fingers are being measured. We are accordingly making a new gauge plate in the form of a continuous disc. | ||
