Brake Ropes Hitting Undersheets.

We have recently come across several cases of brake ropes hitting the undersheets of cars. We understand that on 90% of cars leaving the Coachbuilders rubber covers are fitted to the brake ropes at the point where they foul the undersheet, and that this is done by the Coachbuilders. In certain cases this rubber sheath wears out and then the clatter recommences.

We do not know any way of overcoming this difficulty unless we have an adjustment on the brake ropes. We ourselves consider that such an adjustment is really very desirable because the brake ropes invariably stretch and when they are slack it results in a lot of lost servo movement. It is also liable to promote brake thumps. The lost movement has been emphasized recently when we have been trying to get direct braking on all four wheels.

In the meantime we are proposing to develop a rubber covering for the brake ropes ourselves, with which the cars can leave the Works. We shall at least then know what is being fitted.
