SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox.

We understand that the next box to be built will have a casing unaltered from that of the first box, but that the pattern alterations for the reverse shaft oil duct and the forward drain plug will be made before a third casting is made.

The next or 2nd.box should have the following alterations compared with the first.

1. All forward and reverse gears and spiral splines for 1st. speed wheel of opposite hand.

2. All shaft splines and journal surfaces for ball and roller bearings to be casehardened together with the bores and splines of the gears and S.M. sliding pieces, with the following exceptions:-

(a) 1st. speed wheel and sleeve for this wheel.

(b) Wheel on the layshaft for the reverse gear drive.

(c) Splines on the first motion shaft and in the layshaft drive pinion.

These pieces are thought not to need more than the usual degree of hardness. The casehardened surfaces for the 3rd. and 2nd. speed loose gears are to be formed directly on the shaft.

3. Two of the modifications to the actuation of the 2nd speed as shown by N Sch.4207 should be incorporated as follows:-

(a) Nut with extension to avoid the forward spring ring.

(b) Washer on the fulcrum pin for accurate location of the rocking levers. Reduced in diameter to pass through smaller threaded hole as on GL{G. Linnett} 740.
