EXPERIMENTAL REPORT.

of the pivot pin instead of being 6º has been altered to 4º 10'. With this axle we can also afford to have stiffer springs in the side steering tube and still get less shocks on the steering wheel.

When a car is fitted with balloon tyres which at low speeds offers considerable resistance against turning, there is considerable wind-up when weak side steering tube springs are used.

Fixing of steering box.

The fixing for the steering box on this car is the type [crossed out text] with the cantilever off the crankcase with the tie rod to the rear engine foot. The joints of the tie rod have worn quite slack, allowing movement of the whole steering mounting if the car was steered when stationary. We have re-fitted the tie rod and tightened up the steering mounting.

Silencer.

The silencer is fitted with a cutout of the type with 2 butterfly valves. It has not been found possible to prevent the first valve from rattling; we have therefore done away with the first valve and now rely on the single butterfly valve at the back. We have had another car running fitted with this arrangement for some time and it appears to be satisfactory.
