To Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}
From GWH. {George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}

11.7.31.

We have received your letters of the 8th and 9th instant.

The failure of the front silencer may be due to two reasons. In the first place it was fitted up with the weak stay bracket which crumpled up during the run here, secondly the front silencer was pressing hard on the tie-rod. It should have .500" clearance. The sliding joint did not appear to have been working, but it was perfectly free when taken down. The second reason may be poor mild steel. I have tested previous M.S. boxes but have never seen a box fail the same as this one did, and knowing that we have had the above conditions with a staybrite silencer, I put the failure to faulty material or burning when welding.

I am quite in agreement that the bonnet job must be a production proposition and shall be pleased to discuss this over with you next week.

Leslie asked whether he could go after the mornings run on Thursday, and seeing no objection, I let him go. He should report on Monday morning.

We are obtaining comparative figures of the radiators to-day and will send the results along. The air temperature is gradually building up again.

We are going on Sunday the 12th inst. to the Col-de-la {L. A. Archer} -faucille as I wish to get these tests through before returning to Derby. We should return here Tuesday and I will endeavour to catch the midnight train and be at the Works on Thursday morning.

G.W.H.
ey Hancock.
