SUGGESTED CAUSE FOR CHATTERING OF FRONT BRAKES.

Consider the following conditions :-

(1) A force P. is applied suddenly to the wrapping shoe and owing to the assisting momeent of the frictional force F.{Mr Friese} about the pivot, the normal reaction R.{Sir Henry Royce} becomes greater than that obtained under statical conditions.

Let the applied force P. be of such magnitude that with the assistance of the wrapping action the frictional force F.{Mr Friese} is just sufficient to lock the shoes to the drum with the spring - which acts as the restoring couple, torsionally undeflected.

(2) We may take it that the resisting moment supplied by the spring will be proportional to the deflection. Consequently, when the drum is suddenly locked to the shoes the spring will rapidly deflect until the restoring force contd:-
