Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}17/R.7.5.38. ALUMINIUM TIN BEARINGS TO FACILITATE PRODUCTION. We have now completed a test bed endurance run on the two types of A.C.9 aluminium tin bearings. We understand that the bearings were of the same composition, one being die cast, and the other centrifugally cast. The die cast big end bearings appear to be entirely satisfactory, and we see no reason why they should not be released for production forthwith for all chassis. We are also releasing the die cast main bearings for the Bentley subject to six chassis being satisfactorily got off test first. One of the centrifugally cast bearings has developed a small crack, a characteristic which is common to most of the bearings we have tried made in this manner, and we, therefore, cannot approve of these for the time being. A full report on the bearings will be issued in due course. On the same test, the crankshaft with the less costly finish, the connecting rods with the new panel milling and tin plated pistons were run. These completed 40 hours satisfactorily, and we are, therefore, proposing to standardise them in due course. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
