CHARGING RATE.

The most satisfactory type of yacht electrical equipment is, of course, a small independent charging plant for all lighting batteries, and a dynamo on the engines to charge their own starting batteries. A small dynamo, therefore, can be used, providing it will charge at a reasonable rate at low speeds.

Why so slow.

A dynamo running at one-half engine speed should be used.

As regards ignition, battery is, of course, very satisfactory but two coils should be incorporated, and if possible with a switch to change over from one to the other, so that should a failure occur, the other coil could be brought into instant action. You may not consider this necessary, as failure of coils today are very few, but you will find that in even small motor yachts of the rather luxury type, wherever possible duplication of controls occurs, such as petrol lines, ignition etc. Failure of one engine, in a twin engined hull, may cause the loss of the ship if it happens in a bad sea.

GEAR BOXES.

These should be silent and of a wellkown make. I suggest Parsons of Southampton once again. These gear boxes have to stand up to very hard work when the ship is berthing or manouvring. Sudden loads ahead and astern at quite high engine revs put on them.
